Irregular silviculture positively influences multiple bat species in a lowland temperate broadleaf woodland

چکیده

Changing economics in the 20th century led to losses and fragmentation of semi-natural woodland Britain a reduction active management with many becoming increasingly neglected, even-aged closed canopy. Lack is known contribute declines some taxonomic groups, for example birds. However, response bats changes structure are poorly understood. We compared two measures bat activity, derived from static acoustic recorders across 120 sample plots coppice, irregular high forest (uneven-aged, continuous cover) limited intervention (under-managed, even-aged) stands, within large tract ancient southern England. Bat species richness was highest there were significant differences occupancy rates most stand types. Coppice recorded low activity several showed rates, including Barbastelle Barbastella barbastellus, which IUCN listed as near threatened. The types differed between mid- late summer counts, suggesting seasonal variation habitat use. Within associated opened canopy, lower growing stocks reduced densities understorey, lesser extent, large-girthed trees presence deadwood snags. In cases, responded given variable similarly three types, whereas others, among For example, increased numbers benefitted number coppice where these least common, but not stands. Irregular silviculture appears provide structural attributes that positively influence species, barbastellus.

Factors Affecting Soil Fauna Feeding Activity in a Fragmented Lowland Temperate Deciduous Woodland

British temperate broadleaf woodlands have been widely fragmented since the advent of modern agriculture and development. As a result, a higher proportion of woodland area is now subject to edge effects which can alter the efficiency of ecosystem functions. These areas are particularly sensitive to drought. Decomposition of detritus and nutrient cycling are driven by soil microbe and fauna coac...

Rates of nocturnal transpiration in two evergreen temperate woodland species with differing water-use strategies.

Nocturnal fluxes may be a significant factor in the annual water budget of forested ecosystems. Here, we assessed sap flow in two co-occurring evergreen species (Eucalyptus parramattensis and Angophora bakeri) in a temperate woodland for 2 years in order to quantify the magnitude of seasonal nocturnal sap flow (E(n)) under different environmental conditions. The two species showed different diu...

No evidence that boron influences tree species distributions in lowland tropical forests of Panama.

It was recently proposed that boron might be the most important nutrient structuring tree species distributions in tropical forests. Here we combine observational and experimental studies to test this hypothesis for lowland tropical forests of Panama. Plant-available boron is uniformly low in tropical forest soils of Panama and is not significantly associated with any of the > 500 species in a ...

Correction: Large roads reduce bat activity across multiple species

Although the negative impacts of roads on many terrestrial vertebrate and bird populations are well documented, there have been few studies of the road ecology of bats. To examine the effects of large roads on bat populations, we used acoustic recorders to survey bat activity along ten 300 m transects bordering three large highways in northern California, applying a newly developed statistical ...
